    What is hesperidin powder?

    Hesperidin is a dihydroflavonoid glycoside with the molecular formula C29H33O15 and a molecular weight of 610.56. Pure hesperidin appears as white needle-like crystals, while the crude extract is usually a dark brown crystalline powder. First isolated from citrus peel in 1828, it is the main active ingredient of vitamin P (permeability vitamin), which earned it the name "natural vitamin P". Hesperidin is widely distributed in nature: 30%–50% is found in the skin, pericarp and peel of dried citrus fruits, and about 1%–5% is found in the peel. Modern industrial production uses citrus fruit processing waste, peels and pericarps as raw materials. By alkaline extraction and acid precipitation, ultrasonic-assisted extraction or ion exchange, hesperidin was concentrated to more than 90% and then spray-dried into liquid hesperidin powder.

    What is soluble hesperidin?

    Water: About 50 liters of pure water at 25°C are required to completely dissolve 1 gram of hesperidin powder; the solubility increases slightly in hot water above 70°C.

    Organic solvents: Freely soluble in pyridine, dimethylformamide and sodium hydroxide solution; slightly soluble in glacial acetic acid and methanol; insoluble in acetone, benzene, chloroform and ether.

    pH sensitivity: In alkaline solutions (pH > 9), it opens with a ring that forms them, which rapidly increases its solubility. When the pH returns to acidic levels, it closes again and swells. Therefore, "alkaline dissolution and acid precipitation" is a commonly used method for the purification of hesperidine powder in the laboratory.

    Process significance: Due to its poor water solubility, ordinary hesperidine powder is easily precipitated in highly aqueous systems such as beverages and oral liquids. The incorporation of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, solid dispersion, or microemulsification techniques are commonly used in the industry to improve its aqueous dispersion stability and ensure the purity and clarity of the final product.

    The difference between hesperidin and hesperidin

    "Glycosides" and "glycosides" belong to both old and new naming systems:
    • Old names: "Glycosides" in hesperidin is translated from Japanese in the 1950s;
    • New name: After the 1990s, my country's Scientific Terminology Committee changed the term "glycosides" to a synonym for "glycosides", resulting in the name "hesperidin".

    As a result, in academic journals, pharmacopoeias and international standards, it is now written as "hesperidin" in the same way. However, some old literature and some ancient engineers still use the term "hesperidin". The two have the same chemical structure and CAS numbers (520-26-3), and they can be considered the same substance. It is important to note that the terms “Hesperidin = Hesperidin-7-O-rutinoside” and “Hesperidin = Hesperidin-7-O-neohesperidin” that you sometimes see online are actually misinterpretations of “Hesperidin and Neohesperidin” and should not be confused.
