Kavalactone Powder

Kavalactones Powderis the core active ingredient from the dried root of Piper methysticum, a plant in the Piperaceae family. It is extracted with organic solvents, concentrated, and dried to produce a light yellow to yellow-green fine powder. Commercial specifications are measured in "total kavalactones," with three common levels: 30%, 50%, and 70%. Kavalactone powder containing 30% is considered "pure kavalactone powder," while 70% and above is considered high-purity monomer grade and is primarily used in scientific research and high-end formulations.

China: The National Health Commission accepted the "New Food Ingredient" application in March 2025. Currently, it is only used as a health food excipient. The recommended daily intake of total kavalactones is ≤90 mg.

US: The FDA-NDI list allows 30% extracts for use in dietary supplements, and the label must state "May cause drowsiness."

EU: Novel Food approval has not been granted. The German BfArM limits the daily intake to "≤120 mg of kavalactones" and requires a hepatotoxicity warning. Controversy surrounding hepatotoxicity: The WHO reviewed 119 cases from 2002–2023, finding that 92% involved high-concentration ethanol/acetone extracts in patients with a history of liver disease. No significant ALT elevation was observed with aqueous extracts or the 30% strength at the recommended dose.
